Check the report's cover page or methodology section for disclosures. If funding sources aren't listed, be skeptical immediately.

Industry bodies like SAE International typically disclose their backing clearly. Reports that hide or bury this detail deserve extra scrutiny.

Examine the sample size and methodology

A survey claiming "78% of drivers prefer X" means nothing without context. Who answered? How many? Over what time period?

Reports that cite fewer than 500 respondents in a national survey are often marketing documents pretending to be research.

Disagreement isn't bad—it's realistic. Real research varies. Marketing spin tends toward unanimous certainty.

When multiple independent analyses converge on a finding—especially from sources with different incentives—that's signal worth paying attention to.
